What’s scary — Almost a quarter of new HIV cases in the United States are diagnosed in youth.
But what’s even scarier — More than half of those young people, ages 13 to 24, don’t even know they are infected, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The good news? There’s a way to fight back.
National Youth HIV & AIDS Awareness Day will be held on April 10. According to a news release from the New Jersey Poison Information & Educational System, the day is an opportunity to remind the public that HIV infection remains a serious health concern for Americans, especially among populations heavily affected by the virus, including blacks and Latinos.
According to the CDC, most new HIV infection in the 13 to 24 age group occur among gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men. Black and Latino gay and bisexual men are affected at the greatest rate.
According to the release, the youth awareness day was created to raise awareness of HIV and AIDS prevention, testing, care and treatment among all youth; key strategies in reducing the impact of the disease in their communities.
