War Diaries

Published: August 16, 2010

Dear Colleague,

We are proud to present War Diaries, published jointly by AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA) and the Global Forum on MSM & HIV (MSMGF).

War Diaries is our fourth publication committed to the ideas, experiences and wellbeing of black gay and bisexual men. Since 2003, the series has featured Think Again, If We Have to Take Tomorrow and To Be Left With the Body. We have been encouraged by the success of these publications and a thirst for meaningful black and gay perspectives in the AIDS sector. This has compelled us to expand our partnerships in order to better bring rigorous and varied voices to bear on our work to address HIV/AIDS in both the United States and at the global level.

War Diaries editors, Tisa Bryant and Ernest Hardy, masterfully bring together a diverse range of creative writing and personal essays that lay bear the brutality of social oppression while tapping the resilience and beauty inherent among lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people of the African diaspora. War Diaries urges us to remain forward thinking as we consider the factors, feelings and fierceness that matter in the lives of black men and those who love and support them.

APLA has remained committed to creating vehicles for allowing those most affected by AIDS to tell their stories. Increasingly we find ways to connect this local and national work to that of our colleagues around the globe. Thus working with the MSMGF serves to strengthen this shared cultural production, increasing visibility and encouraging collective action with gay men of color in a time of expanding plague. With this common view it made sense for us to launch the global premier of War Diaries at the XVIII International AIDS Conference, recently held in July, 2010 in Vienna, Austria. We are now pleased to share War Diaries with you as part of our U.S. debut and dissemination.

We have come to rely on community feedback to keep us going. For those of you who have made the time to give us feedback, we thank you. For those who have not yet shared your comments, we would be grateful if you could take a moment to help make our work better by filling out and returning our brief survey. This is a standing invitation to our entire readership, so please feel free to write to us.
