Anyone who has looked at a newspaper, a magazine, an online news source or basically any media outlet knows that the transgender community are finally letting their voices be heard.

Within the last few months, the brave voices of men and women of the transgender community have grown louder and stronger within the mainstream and social media outlets. It has been a longtime coming, but finally individuals of the transgender community are able to tell their own stories.

It is no secret that transgender men and women have to deal with a lot of ignorance and prejudice on a day to day basis. Despite the fact that it is 2015, some people still have to hide who they truly are. By select individuals such as Laverne Cox or Bruce Jenner, and parents of transgender children, such as Zay Crawford, coming forward and telling this story, these individuals are creating social awareness and, eventually, social acceptance.

Now, it’s up to the rest of the world to use these stories to promote love and acceptance. That’s not too much to ask, right?

Apparently, it is. While more and more people and publications, such as BuzzFeed and The Huffington Post, are becoming more accepting, a lot of mainstream media is unfortunately not promoting social awareness or acceptance of the transgender culture. Instead, gossip magazines choose to make fun of Bruce Jenner and certain news outlets choose to use the wrong pronoun.
