Semarang: Some 2,000 sex workers living and working in the city of Semarang, Central Java, have contracted HIV/AIDS, according to Griya ASA, an NGO that provides guidance to prostitutes.
Many of these escorts went home throughout the month of Ramadhan and for Idul Fitri, prompting fears that they may have infected others with the sexually transmitted disease.
“These people have a sense of ethics, however,” Griya ASA’s coordinator, Ari Istiadi, said on Sunday.
He added that sex workers tended to be discreet about their work. As such, they would not risk having their secrets exposed by opening for business in places where people knew them, he added.
