The term “spouse” in the Domestic Violence Act should be redefined to include same-sex partners. This would allow gay victims of domestic violence to make applications under the Act.

The suggestion was made by attorney Lynette Seebaran-Suite, chairperson of the Equal Opportunity Commission (EOC), at the launch of a survey on Caribbean men done by UNAIDS Caribbean.

UNAIDS is a United Nations organisation whose primary goals are to prevent and reduce new HIV infections, as well as fighting discrimination against persons with AIDS.

Two weeks ago, Seebaran-Suite revealed the new board of the EOC was recommending to Cabinet that the Equal Opportunities Act be amended to include sexual orientation so homosexuals could have legal recourse if they felt they were being discriminated against.

In a news statement, UNAIDS described the Caribbean Men’s Internet Survey (Carimis) as “the region’s largest study of gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men”.
