MSMGF congratulates Sergio López for his recent appointment to the Global Fund Board

MSMGF congratulates Sergio López for his recent appointment to the Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) delegation of the Global Fund Board as Youth Representative for the region.

(Nov 06, 2015)–Sergio López is a 22 year-old gay activist and current Program Officer with SOMOSGAY, a grassroots organization committed to the innovation of effective strategies against homophobia, in fighting HIV and AIDS, and for defending and promoting human rights in Paraguay. Sergio is also an active member of the MSMGF Youth Reference Group (YRG).Sergio has been an active member of MSMGF’s YRG for more than 3 years. Comprised of young MSM (YMSM) advocates working for the health and human rights of YMSM populations in their respective regions around the world, MSMGF’S YRG advises and coordinates our work on YMSM issues. The YRG advocates for the empowerment of YMSM within the global HIV response through skills building, cross networking, and meaningful participation in the decision-making processes that affect YMSM.

Sergio represented MSMGF’s YRG at the All In! Consultation, convened by UNICEF and UNAIDS in December 2014. That consultation examined how UNAIDS 90-90-90 treatment targets, and goals for preventing new HIV infections, could be tailored to the specific needs of adolescents. Sergio served on the planning committee of the Youth Caucus; spoke at the opening session of the consultation; and provided input on documents and the All In! Strategic Framework. Sergio also represented the YRG at MSMGF’s internal Strategic Planning Meeting in May 2015, where he helped MSMGF keep a consistent focus on the needs of YMSM.

“Today, we are encouraged to see that the Global Fund, PEPFAR, UNAIDS, and other large multilaterals meaningfully include young MSM in their programs, policies, and funding initiatives,” said Dr. George Ayala, Executive Director of MSMGF. “We are proud of our role as connective tissue, facilitating linkages between local advocates and global policy processes, ensuring that local needs and knowledge shape the global AIDS response.”

MSMGF is confident that Sergio’s experience and perspective will be vital for his new role as Youth Representative, on the Latin American delegation of the Global Fund Board. We know his skills and strengths as an advocate and MSM program professional will greatly benefit both the Global Fund and YMSM worldwide. MSMGF will support his the role on the delegation as needed and wish him success in the work that lies ahead.

Kind regards,
