The Human Science Research Council has shared an article by Pierre Brouard, Dawie Nel and Allanise Cloete about The South African Marang Men’s Project.
In the article, the authors discuss the historical neglect of men who have sex with men (MSM) in studies of HIV transmission in South Africa. This is despite the fact that MSM are among those hardest hit by the HIV epidemic.
The South African Marang Men’s Project, they say, presents research that fills this important gap in the research.

In our study, we used a method of sampling which allowed us to systematically access members of traditionally hard-to-reach target populations who are otherwise not easy to connect with (i.e. those who do no frequent public venues, access facility-based services or who do are not in contact with outreach workers). Using this method we were able to survey hidden populations within minority groups. For instance, the Marang Men’s Project found high estimates of previous incarceration and of “selling sex to men” in these two cities.
