MPact Fondly Remembers Maria Sundin, Transgender Activist (1946-2021)

MPact’s Board of Directors, Staff, and Steering Committee are deeply saddened by the passing of world-renowned transgender activist, leader, and movement builder Maria Sundin from Sweden.

Sundin was a fierce and courageous leader who spoke truth to power and catalyzed major policy and advocacy wins on behalf of transgender communities in Europe and globally. Sundin not only worked tirelessly on behalf of the trans community, but also spoke out loudly against injustices targeting the wider LGBTI community and sex workers.

As a gay-led organization, MPact benefited greatly from its close and longstanding partnership with Sundin. She was a founding member of MPact’s Transgender Reference Group (now the IRGT) when it was originally formed in 2010-2011 by a group of 11 transgender leaders from around the world. As a dedicated member of the group, Sundin was instrumental in advising MPact on a wide range of trans issues and in helping grow the IRGT into an independent entity. From 2016 to 2020 Sundin proudly served on MPact’s international Steering Committee.

MPact joins the global HIV and LGBTI communities in grieving the loss of an inspiring community leader. Sundin’s flair, humor, and strong advocacy will be deeply missed, but her legacy will live on in us and in the many lives she touched around the world.

Rest in power, Maria Sundin!
