David Cameron has pledged to tackle prejudice against transgender people and said “one of the most important things” is to combat bullying in schools related to sexual orientation.
“I think we need to take a look at what the issues are and what the specific issues of discrimination that trans people have,” said the prime minister. “I think one of the most important things is what happens in our schools, particularly homophobic and biphobic bullying.”
The prime minister told a BuzzFeed Brews event in Westminster that he was “very proud” of his government introducing same-sex marriage, but accepted that more must be done to “end this idea that it’s somehow fair to criticise people because of their sexuality”.
Same-sex marriage was introduced in the UK in 2014 under Cameron’s coalition government, although before becoming prime minister he spoke against it. He said he changed his mind after being told about bullying in schools.
“It’s one of the reasons I became so convinced about gay marriage,” he said.
“It’s only when a society says marriage is there for everybody whether you’re straight or gay … you end this idea that it’s somehow fair to criticise people or do down people because of their sexuality.”
