The justice committee of the House of Commons passed a trans rights bill on Nov 2 that is almost a decade in the making. The bill, introduced by New Democrat MP Bill Siksay, would prohibit discrimination in Canada on the basis of gender identity.
This is the third time the bill has made its way through Parliament.
The Commons committee — which includes Montreal Liberal MP Marlene Jennings and the NDP’s Joe Comartin — passed the bill with two Conservative members opposed. It now returns to the House of Commons for third reading. If it passes there, it will head to the Senate for consideration.
