Australians Warned over Asian HIV Rise

A new report from the Kirby Institute at the University of New South Wales says HIV infections among men who have sex with men are up by 300 percent in Jakarta and 200 percent in Ho Chi Minh City, and health experts are warning Australian tourists visiting Southeast Asia to be on guard. Among heterosexual Australian men diagnosed with HIV between 2005 and 2009, almost half said their sex partner was from an overseas country with high rates of HIV/AIDS. Australians traveling in the region may not be aware of the greater risk of unsafe sex, said Rob Lake, executive director of the Australian Federation of AIDS Organizations.
