Alex Garner Joins MPact as New Director of Community Engagement

OAKLAND, CA – MPact Global Action for Gay Men’s Health and Rights has selected Alex Garner, formerly the Senior Health Innovation Strategist at Hornet, as its new Director of Community Engagement.

At Hornet, Alex crafted all sexual health messaging, developed social marketing campaigns, created digital content, and led the gay social network app’s global research efforts. Alex is a queer Chicano activist with over 25 years of experience working as a community organizer. He has been a freelance writer and artist for over two decades, capturing the experiences and perspectives of the queer community. Alex has been living with HIV for over 25 years and has utilized the cultural arts to advance the narratives of people living with HIV.

“I am thrilled to be joining MPact at this tremendous time of growth and change in the organization,” Garner said. “Our communities lived through 40 years of the HIV pandemic and continue to struggle with the challenges presented by our newest pandemic, COVID-19. There is a great deal of work to be done yet we also have incredible opportunities to educate, empower, and mobilize our communities to ensure that our rights are protected and our health and wellness is improved.”

As the Director of Community Engagement, Garner will manage the strategic vision and implementation of a wide range of HIV, health, and human rights initiatives with stakeholders at all levels. This new department at MPact will be responsible for all community mobilization initiatives, communication efforts, and policy advocacy at the grassroots and international levels.
