Earlier today, MSMGF organized an informational webinar for interested applicants to the 2018 Challenge. The webinar introduced the guiding principles of the Out With It pre-meeting at AIDS2018, a presentation from our partners at YTH on the fundamental ideas behind Human Centered Design which will provide the basis of our conference, and detailed logistics for submitting a video application.

The following questions were posed by webinar attendees and answered by MSMGF staff.
Can you give more specifics about logistics, costs and support to participants?
All hotel costs and registration costs to attend AIDS 2018 for up to two people per each selected team will be provided by MSMGF. Innovation Teams attending the Pre-Meeting will need to fund raise to cover their transportation to Amsterdam and per diem costs for meals. MSMGF will provide selected teams with a letter of support to encourage additional fundraising efforts.
Is the invitation to MSMGF’s meeting tied to the proposal submission?
No, your proposal submission and your registration for the MSMGF pre-meeting are separate. Please see our call for details regarding proposal submission. To register to attend the MSMGF pre-meeting, click here.
What if my innovation is not sex positive? Then what?
We are seeking innovative, youth-led community solutions for the sexual health and rights of young gay and bisexual men. However, your solution does not have to be focused on sex or sexuality alone. Proposed solutions can be centered around any of the issues identified in the call for proposals.
The call for proposals says that the ideas have to be led by young MSM. Can it be managed by someone who doesn’t identify as a young MSM? What age criteria do you use?
As per our eligibility criteria, your team must
- Be youth-led (a majority of team members must be under the age of 30);
- Have up to two members that will attend the MSMGF Pre-Meeting in Amsterdam; and,
- Be able to present in English at the MSMGF Pre-Meeting.
Can trans women or MSM who are not sure of their gender apply?
Anyone can apply as long as they meet the eligibility criteria.
Can the beneficiaries of the proposed project by gay and bisexual men and others from the LGBTQ community?
Your proposed solution must clearly be linked to gay and bisexual men and other men who have sex with men. This includes transgender men who identify as gay, bisexual and/or have men who have sex with men. However, we encourage coalition approaches that include collaborations with all parts of the LGBTQ community and
My team members have not registered for the AIDS conference. Is it not too late for them to register?
If you plan to attend the International AIDS Conference in Amsterdam after the MSMGF pre-meeting, you must register for it separately. Details about AIDS 2018 conference registration can be found at www.aids2018.org
How do you define innovation?
Innovation does not exclude initiatives that have been implemented within other communities – a team could theoretically take a solution that has worked previously and use it to apply to a new context. That is certainly innovation.
How edited do you expect the videos to me?
Production value is not key to creating a good video application. A video can be as simple as a selfie or as complex as you are able. If you’ve got the skills for video editing, show them off! However, in order to pitch your solution successfully, we are mostly interested to hear you speak passionately about your solution to a set of challenges faced by the MSM community.
If a team that is selected does not manage to find funding to come to Amsterdam, will you select another team instead?
Only hotel costs and registration costs to attend AIDS 2018 for up to two people per each selected team will be provided by MSMGF. If you’re unable to procure support for other expenses, MSMGF will work hard at identifying funding for selected teams to attend and will link selected finalists with potential donors.
Since the call states support for ideas that are feasible, is it important to include cost of implementing a solution?
At this initial stage of development, the goal is not to fully build out a solution but to engage the community in order to address a challenge. Once teams are selected, then questions of cost implications will come into play much more closely.
Is there a suggested timeframe for the implementation of activities?
At this time, we are only looking for solutions at the initial design stage. If your proposed solution is selected, subsequent funding opportunities that you or MSMGF will seek will determine the scope and length of activities.
I have a great idea but I don’t have collaborators or a team. Can MSMGF help connect me with others? Can an individual apply instead of a team?
Yes, you can apply as an individual especially if you have trouble identifying collaborators in your country or region. We will look for evidence that you tried to search for collaborators. Additionally, MSMGF will work with you to link you with other experts and collaborators from the pool of pre-meeting attendees.
Does my solution have to be limited to one country or region? Can teams be from multiple countries?
Your solution does not have to be limited to one country or region. We welcome teams who are spread across multiple countries or regions.

Yes, you can apply as an individual especially if you have trouble identifying collaborators in your country or region. We will look for evidence that you tried to search for collaborators.
Does my solution have to be technology-related?

Is there any document that we need to submit along with the video submission?
