Summary Report: Rapid situation analysis of men who have sex with men in the Maghreb and Lebanon
This document presents the results of a rapid situation analysis conducted in 2003 and 2004 by the International HIV/AIDS Alliance (the Alliance) amongst men who have sex with men (MSM)1 in three countries of North Africa – Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia. More informal contacts were also established with some players involved in HIV/AIDS prevention in Lebanon during the same period. The main objective of the rapid situation analysis was to gain a better understanding of the needs of MSM in the Maghreb and Lebanon on a number of different levels – social, sexual, health, emotional, community, economic, etc. – with a view to establishing specific HIV prevention and support programmes. The situation analysis ended in a feedback workshop (in Casablanca) involving some of the people who participated in the survey plus representatives from a number of the region’s HIV/AIDS associations.
