SMAAN Core Group Meeting Report

The International Centre for Advocacy on Rights to Health (ICARH) – with generous support- from the National Endowment for Democracy Fund (NED) organized a 2-day strategic meeting of member of Sexual Minority Against AIDS in Nigeria (SMAAN) on 28th and 29th June 2012.
SMAAN is a coalition of Nigerian civil society groups promoting HIV prevention interventions targeting Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) persons in the Nigeria since 2007. SMAAN works to ensure that sexual minorities are part of a complementary national strategy to the respond to HIV and AIDS in Nigeria.

The meeting was held following a consultation with pioneer and new member through “survey monkey”. The result of the survey informed the objectives of the meeting, which is as follows:
– Restructure the existing network, in order to strengthen the network for a sustainable achievement.
– Review the activities of SMAAN member organizations since 2007 till date.
– Develop a SMART strategic plan for the network.
– Reorganize the membership/leadership of the SMAAN network as well as to discuss other pressing issues.
– Increase the presence of the network to implementing partners
– Develop strategies to reach out to implementing partners to access funding and technical support
