Moscow's Homophobic Mayor Gets the Boot

Citing a “loss of confidence,” Russian president Dmitry Medvedev fired Moscow mayor Yury Luzhkov, known for his long-standing ban on a gay pride celebration in the capital and calling gay activists “satanic,” The Advocate reports.

Luzhkov, who had been mayor for 18 years, had become the subject of criticism from the general population in recent years, particularly when he chose to stay on vacation Austria while fires were ravaging Moscow last summer.

While the mayor’s ouster may have more to do with general incompetence than his attitude toward the LGBTQ community, activists are nonetheless pleased by Luzhkov’s departure.
