PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – When the United Nations Summit on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) opens in New York next week, Caribbean Community (CARICOM) countries will report some measure of success on their efforts to deal with the deadly HIV/AIDS virus, according to a senior UN AIDS official.

Director of the UNAIDS Caribbean Regional Support Team, Dr. Ernest Massiah, said that 10 years after the region joined the international community in launching the MDGs designed to change the lives of millions and usher in a new world era for developing countries, it will be able to report favourably on MDG 6 that deals with HIV.

According to Dr. Massiah, the number of AIDS-related deaths has been reduced by 40 per cent between 2001 and 2008.
