KATHMANDU: Government officials today urged the government to give legal identity to sex workers for addressing the HIV/AIDS problem in an effective way.
‘’The present legal provision has proved a major hindrance in identifying the root cause of HIV/AIDS, “said Dr Krishna K Rai, director of National Centre for AIDS and STI Control under the Health Ministry. He added that police arrest sex workers as though they were major criminals. He said that sex workers should be legalised in the country.
“Only if the government legalises it, will the HIV/AIDS programme be able to reach the grassroots level,” said Rai, adding that sex workers are one of the higher risk groups.
He said the government is working with the public to make the present strategies more effective as the sole effort of the government cannot address the problem.
