Australians are getting more liberal but many in more rural areas think LGBT people are sinful and shouldn’t be able to adopt, according to a new survey.
Bigger cities scored well for gay-friendliness in the survey of 130,000 Aussies by Roy Morgan Research but more isolated areas, particularly in Queensland, much of which is sparsely populated, had more homophobic views.
The poll was released as the Australian Parliament began debating a Green Party proposal to make same-sex marriage legal in the country.
Overall the proportion of Australians thinking that homosexuality is immoral has fallen from 36% in 2001 to 27% today.
