In Minnesota there are health disparities affecting the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. According to Healthy People 2020, research suggests that LGBT individuals face health care disparities related to social stigma, discrimination and denial of their civil human rights.
Within Central Minnesota, there is not a clinic specifically designed for the LGBT community.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, only 10 states have LGBT clinics, and Minnesota is not one of them. LGBT individuals may find comfort in having a better connection and relationship with their physicians and other health care staff, as well as a better feeling of acceptance.
Although this may improve health care disparities within the LGBT community, this cannot be the only approach to fixing this issue.
These disparities are occurring in Central Minnesota, and raising awareness to end social stigmas and discrimination toward this group of people regarding health care must be acknowledged.
